Corners is a publication of the journalism, photojournalism, and documentary studies department in the School of Communication at Northern Arizona University. Our intent is to showcase not only the best student and faculty projects coming out of our program at NAU, but eventually to also include stories by community members.

Unlike many student run publications, Corners is a joint effort among students and faculty. Our journalism professors are seasoned professionals, specializing in long form journalism, environmental topics, and features, as well as engaging in cinematic journalism and short form documentaries.

The first issue represents some of the best work coming from seniors enrolled in the journalism capstone course taught by Annette McGivney, as well as students from classes in intermediate and advanced photojournalism taught by Laura Camden and a film course taught by Kurt Lancaster. In addition, we’ve included work produced by students who went on a faculty led trip to a Tibetan refugee camp in Mainpat, India.

The variety of stories capture the uniqueness of the Southwest, as well as touching on global themes. Tablets are perfect for multimedia journalism—but we’re following dictum that we do not do multimedia for multimedia’s sake. If the story is great as a written piece of long form journalism with a few photos, then nothing more is needed. Use films, audio, and photos, if needed to help tell the story better.
